Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday issued a stern warning against the spread of misinformation on social media, which he claims is fueling enmity between communities already strained by recent unrest.

In a public address, he stated, “I have come to know that some miscreants are spreading rumours through social media to create enmity between two communities. I have instructed concerned departments to identify the culprits.”

As part of ongoing efforts to aid those affected by the recent violence, CM Biren Singh announced financial assistance for displaced families living in relief camps.

“Today, we are distributing Rs 5,000 each to 5,225 displaced persons who are living in relief camps. Another 80 people are receiving Rs 10,000,” he said.

The Chief Minister appealed to the public to exercise caution while sharing information online. “I urge everyone to verify the facts before sharing anything on social media. Let us not fall prey to rumours that can divide us further,” he said.

Manipur, a state with a history of ethnic tensions, has faced renewed conflict in recent months. The violence has resulted in the displacement of thousands and heightened communal tensions, particularly between the Meitei and Kuki communities.

The unrest in Manipur has been rooted in long-standing ethnic divisions, exacerbated by contentious land rights, reservation policies, and a demand for Scheduled Tribe status by the Meitei community.

Clashes broke out earlier this year, leading to widespread violence, arson, and loss of life. In response, the state government has deployed additional security forces and implemented curfews in sensitive areas.

Social media platforms have played a significant role in escalating tensions, with fake news and provocative posts contributing to the unrest.
